Biological Weapons in the 21st Century
Seminar on June 9, 2001, at the German Hygienic Museum, Dresden


The Sunshine Project, in cooperation with the German Hygienic Museum, IPPNW and medico international is organising a seminar on current issues in biological weapons.

The rapid development of biotechnology and genetic engineering during the past two decades has increased the danger of biological warfare. Biotechnology know how is now globally available and using genetic engineering, even more devastating weapons have become possible. Internationally, new arms control mechanisms must be developed to strengthen the Biological Weapons Convention.

The seminar will bring together arms control experts, policymakers, and media experts as well as biological and medical scientists. The first portion of the seminar is devoted to an overview of the history and recent developments in biological weapons, to provide all participants with a similar background.

The second part of the seminar will focus on ethical and political questions. The responsibility of scientists and practical political options will be discussed - hopefully controversially - by outstanding participants from science, industry, government and non-governmental organisations.

A panel discussion on political options to reduce the biowarfare risk will be held, including as participants the speakers as well as Dr. L. Pohlmeier (IPPNW), Prof. U. Beisiegel (scientist), I. Hunger (BTWC Secretariat), and a spokesperson of the German biotechnology industry.
